A very Happy New Year from Rainbows End!
It is that time of year again when lot’s of us have made new year’s resolutions and are already wondering if we have any chance of sticking to them. Here are some of our top tips for making resolutions that you will stick to and making sure that you do:
- Be very specific about your resolution. Don't say: "I want to lose weight." Do say: "I want to lose 5 pounds a month so that I look fabulous in my new swimsuit when I go on holiday." Make realistic, measurable goals and write them down.
- Limit the number of resolutions you make. It's better to do one thing well than several things badly, or not at all.
- Post your list in a visible place to serve as a reminder and encouragement to yourself. It will also allow other people to see your resolutions and provide support. If you want to keep your resolutions private, record them in a diary or notebook.
- Enlist the support of your friends and family. If you're lucky, they'll have similar goals and you can work on your resolutions together. Encourage people to be helpful and supportive.
- Take action immediately. Make important appointments with a doctor, dietitian or personal trainer and use your diary to schedule actions. Always tick off your achievements as it is a great motivator.
- Practice new behavior to encourage success. Write a ‘to do’ list for the next day every evening, and give yourself a pat on the back when you have completed the list. Limit your exposure to people who are likely to encourage resolution-breaking and surround yourself with people who encourage and support you.
- Set incremental goals and reward yourself for partial successes. If you are working on your fitness for example, promise yourself a new pair of jeans when you have dropped a clothes size.
- Substitute a good habit for the bad one you want to break. If you want to spend more time with your family, establish a special time during the week when everyone is together doing something together, a trip to the park or a walk in the woods may be all that it takes.
